‘The Voice’: What in the world are they thinking?

I think it’s finally going to happen, folks. The time you have all been waiting for may be right around the corner. You’ve all waited so patiently for it to happen, and that patience may finally be rewarded.

I’m talking about my forehead vein, of course. It’s sticking out a good six inches right now. And now is has the neck vein to keep it company.

What’s got me so aggravated that I played the Rant music off the air last night? Twice?

Three words: Cee Lo Green.

And two more words: Blake Shelton.

Does anyone know if these two guys realize that The Voice is a competition and that they are fighting against the other coaches to have someone from their team win?

I didn’t think so.

Somewhere along the way, Cee Lo (who will be referred to from now on as Soo Lo) and Blake forgot that the purpose of The Voice is to, wait for it…………… find the best voice out there. The coaches are suppose to help the members of their team to, ultimately, take home the title. The coach who has the winning team member wins as well.

But you wouldn’t know that winning was the ultimate goal for Soo Lo and Blake from the asinine decisions they made on The Voice yesterday.

The night was a bad night all the way around. Unlike the previous week, when the Team Christina and Team Blake members took to the stage, just about everyone on Team Adam and Team Soo Lo tanked. In fact, more bombs were dropped on stage last night than had been dropped on Libya over the past month. That’s how bad it was.

For Team Soo Lo, however, most of them have their coach to thank for what happened. How anyone could be expected to perform “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” on anything other than a theme night and still have hopes of being around to sing again is beyond me.

Yet that’s what Soo Lo expected of Tori & Taylor Thompson, the first act to perform on the show last night. Worse yet, they even had to dress the part. Trust me when I say the laughter they heard was not people laughing with them.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the Andrew Sisters, and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” is probably my favorite of the songs they did. And this song is a lot of fun to listen to and even watch being performed. But this competition was not the place for it.

Things for Soo Lo’s team got worse when it was time for him to join the team on stage. This time, Soo Lo picked “Everyday People” for the group to sing. This Sly and the Family Stone classic is a great song that is fun to listen to, but has no place in a competition like this.

From the moment the group sang the first note, you knew this was going to be a disaster. That first note was so far off-key, a new key had to be made to accommodate it. From there, it only went downhill. Only one team member rocked the song. The rest searched frantically for their notes. And their dignity.

Ironically, this would have been a great song to perform on a results show. Even as bad as the singing was on it, it was campy, cheesy, and funny to watch. But it’s those exact same reasons that make it something you don’t do on a night when you are asking America to vote for you.

But it gets worse. Nakia was given King of Leon’s “Sex is on Fire” to perform. Nakia, who is a much better singer than what we saw last night, is not someone I want to hear “Your sex is on fire” from. I’m still banging my head against the brick wall trying to remove that image.

And then there was Curtis Grimes. He was given Robert Palmer’s 80s classic, “Addicted to Love.” Then Curtis countrified it. Just how bad was it? Think about that root canal you had recently. Then think about having it done to all your teeth at the same time. Then double the pain. And add getting run over by an 18-wheeler. While having a lion rip you to shreds. You won’t be close to the pain inflicted by a countrified “Addicted to Love,” but you’ll be closer.

There was one redeeming quality from Soo Lo last night, which was his pick of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” for Vicci Martinez. This is how you pick a song for your contestants and how the contestants should rock it. Soo Lo’s hopes all rest on Vicci at this point. Hopefully he doesn’t try to sabotage her like he has with the rest of the team.

And then we come to Blake Shelton. We found out the voting results for his team at the end of the show. Unfortunately for us, and for the chances of his team, he decided to emulate Soo Lo.

Surprisingly, Dia Frampton got America’s Save last night. I really expected Patrick to get that, consider the country’s fascination with clean-cut, humble, handsome young guys. That should have made Blake’s decision about who to save much easier.

Of the three remaining team members, Patrick Thomas, Jared Blake, and Xenia, either Patrick or Jared were the obvious picks. Both have very strong voices and, I think, would have competed well for America’s votes. Personally, I liked Jared’s country rock style better, but would have been fine with Patrick making it through as well.

But Blake had other ideas. Right before picking, he said, “I can’t affect change with Jared Blake or Patrick Thomas like I can with Xenia. So I’m going to pick Xenia.”

The audience may have been clapping at the news, but the rest of America was picking their collective mouths up off the floor.

I like Xenia. I think she’s a nice girl who has a lot of talent. But right now, she is too shy and too nervous. She needs a lot more practice before being ready for this level, much more practice then she’ll get over the next week.

And I do admire Blake’s desire to want to help Xenia grow. But dude, come on. She has no chance of winning this competition. Please, help her. Offer to give her some lessons and pointers off the stage. Let her perform at a couple of your concerts in order to get some more experience. Pay for her to get vocal lessons and coaching. I think it will one day pay off. But don’t pick her to represent your team in a contest you want to win.

Ouch. My forehead vein. It’s grown another three inches since I started writing this post.

I’m sure I’ll have more to say about this tonight on the Idol Radio Show. So don’t forget to tune in tonight at 11 PM ET / 10 PM CT / 9 PM MT / 8 PM PT.

In the meantime, leave your thoughts about last night’s The Voice in the comments below.

Oh, and watch out for spurting blood. Once these veins pop, there is simply no controlling the flow.

your just mad cause i was right about Xenia being Blake’s pick. Smart man right there. A very smart man. Wait till she wins the whole thing :) I am predicting it now.

Honestly, Slim, Xenia? And she’s nowhere up to being hot enough for your usual tastes in hotties! I totally agree with Alan, Blake wasted an opportunity by picking her. And Ceelo sabotaged his own team with song choices. When you are trying to win, you don’t experiment with what a singer can or cannot do except in practice.

  3. Slim just doesn’t get it, Amy. He argued with me about it on the radio show tonight for a good 15 minutes. The boy is just thick-headed.
