The Top 12 boys are off…….. and boy were they off

Since before Season 10 of American Idol even started, I’ve been looking forward to the Top 24 taking the stage. There were new judges, Nigel Lythgoe was back, and a lot of changes were being made to the show. Once Hollywood Round came around and we started to get a glimpse of the talent that was making it through, I got even more excited. Despite some misgivings about some of the people who made it through, I felt that, overall, it was a good group of Top 24.

Then the guys took the stage and the singing part of the competition was off.

Very off.

Somehow, most of the guys forgot to bring their A-game to the stage last night. This resulted in what has to be one of the worst performance nights on Idol.

Ever.

I would like to chalk up all the bad performances to nerves. After all, this was the first time they were in front of a live audience for the competition, and a large live audience at that. But many of the contestants who performed poorly didn’t seem to be nervous. Or maybe I was just retching too much to be able to see their nerves.

Jordan Dorsey, Tim Halperin, Robbie Rosen, and Stefano Langone were all massive disappointments. Based on Hollywood and Las Vegas, I had come to expect great things from all four of them. But none of them picked a good song, which is saying something since they had almost free rein to choose what they wanted. In addition, they all missed so many notes that it was simply painful. And Jordan picking Usher’s “OMG” to sing had been going OMG, but not in a good way.

By the way, would someone, ANYONE, please tell me why Brett Lowenstern thought it would be a good idea to try to act all sexy up on stage during his performance? I’m not sure which was worse: his vocals or his performance.

And while I’m glad that Casey Abrams ended up being well enough to make the taping of the show last Friday night, it appears that he left the hospital with something in his throat that growls. He really should get that looked at, preferably before my forehead vein pops and I end up in the hospital.

Don’t get me wrong. There were some very good performances last night. The best performance by a mile was James Durbin. No one else came close. He belted out the first Judas Priest song ever done on American Idol, and it brought the house down and the audience to their feet. It was pure greatness.

Jacob Lusk came in second on the night. His voice is nearly unmatched, as he proved with his rendition of “God Bless This Child” during Round 3 of Hollywood Week. He proved that again last night, but he has some mannerisms that are really putting me off. Even when he is trying to tone it down, he comes across as way over the top.

Scotty McCreery rounds out my Top 3. His version of “Letters From Home” was a perfect fit for his voice. He is smooth when he is in his lower register, but can also go higher with no problems.

I’m not alone in my Top 3 pick. Those same three received the highest Dial Idol scores for the night, though in the exact opposite order that I have them in. And just about every blog I’ve read this morning has given high praise to all three of them.

But, frankly, it’s not hard to give them the high praise when they were the only good things in what turned out to be a long 90-minutes. Hopefully, the girls will do better tonight. After all, they can’t do much worse.

Maybe I shouldn’t have said that.

So what did you think about last night’s American Idol? Was it as painful for you as it was for me? Do you agree with my Top 3 picks? Leave your comments below, and don’t forget to share this article on Facebook and tweet it to your friends. All buttons to do that can be found below.

And don’t forget to join Sir Darryl and me (the Token White Guy) tonight at 11 PM EST / 10 PM CST for the Idol Radio Show as we discuss this week’s performances.
