Why is it that every TV show currently on the air, whether a singing competition or not, feels the need to play Lady GagGag’s “The Edge of Glory?” Does the fact that I turn the channel every time it comes on mean nothing to these shows? Of course, this comes from the guy who played part of the song on his radio show last week.
In my defense, that was to annoy Queen Angie during some Lady GagGag news I had for her.
“The Edge of Glory” and “Viva La Vida” are, from the fan’s perspectives, the two most dangerous songs on the Current Hits list to take on because of how well known they are. Whether the judges will be judging with that same opinion is unknown, but if they do, then those groups may be in danger. The most dangerous song on that list from a singing perspective, however, belongs to “Rocketeer.” Much of the song is sung in a very high falsetto, which will leave little room for error for an a capella group. Nail it, and they will be the darlings of the show for the next week. Miss it, and they may not even be around next week.
For my money, however, I think the ’60s Favorites is the most dangerous of the two categories. This is one of the rare times where I can hear every song listed in my head. These songs are such classics that a poor arrangement of any of these songs will only hasten the arrival of that group’s swan song. That said, I think the two most dangerous songs on the list are Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” (let’s be honest….. any Janis Joplin song is dangerous) and “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers (do you realize how many contestants have gone done in flames with this song).
