If the title of this blog entry made you think I would be talking about how Charlie Sheen needs to take some anger management classes, you would be wrong. So very, very wrong.
Yes, I do think the former Two and a Half Men does need a whole army of help managing his anger. Not to mention the help he needs to battle his porn star addiction. And help to learn how to come up with catchy quotes that don’t make him look like more of a buffoon than he already his.
But that’s not the reason for this post today.
Instead, the title refers to the next TV show that the self-delusional self-described “Winning” actor will be starring in. A little show called Anger Management.
That glistening wet stuff you see dripping off that last sentence is called irony. And there is enough of it that some industrious person should be able to figure out how to use it to power our cars for the next 50 years.
In a press release on Monday, which is posted on Yahoo!’s The Wrap, Lionsgate Television announced that Charlie Sheen will return to television in a situation comedy loosely based on the 2003 Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler movie, Anger Management. Sheen will play a variation of Jack Nicholson’s character.
I’m sure it was just an oversight that the press release didn’t mention where else they would be looking for source material for the new show.
The press release also stated that Sheen will have a significant ownership stake in the new series.
Does anyone else think giving him an ownership stake is a mistake? If Charlie Sheen the owner has half the temper that Charlie Sheen the actor has, then the battle that arises when the owner ticks off the actor should make Chernobyl look like a small oops.
Since the news broke yesterday, I’ve been going back and forth as to whether there are enough people left in the country that still want to see Sheen on their TVs every week. Yes, while the train wreck itself was happening, it seemed that people couldn’t get enough of him. But the disaster that was many of his Violent Torpedo of Truth tour stops, as well as the 20/20 hindsight that many people possess, seems to have taken the sheen off, well, Sheen. (Sorry. I just couldn’t resist that one.)
Furthermore, I just don’t understand why anyone would want to take a chance on Charlie Sheen right now. Since his public spat with Chuck Lorre earlier this year, I have seen nothing to indicate that Sheen has made any real progress towards overcoming what must be a battalion of inner demons. Instead, we’ve seen a man who seems to be in denial about who is really responsible for the direction his life has taken. Do the people behind the new TV show really think that the last two years of Two and a Half Men won’t become a repeat on their show?
Sadly, those people have probably thought of all that and feel its a small price to pay for the amount of gold they think Sheen can bring to them. I hope that by the time production of the new series gets underway (as of right now, there is no word on when the series will air), Sheen has cleaned himself up and gotten his act together for the sake of everyone involved.
So what do you think about the latest Charlie Sheen news? Will you watch the show when it airs? Will Sheen have his act together by then or will we simply see more of the same behavior we’ve been seeing this year? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
