I can’t take it anymore. This rush-filled word we live in has affected every corner of my life. We get in our cars and rush to get where we’re going. We sit down to eat and we rush to finish our food. We go to the grocery store and we rush to fill our baskets.
We sit down to watch So You Think You Can Dance and we rush to get to the Top 20.
It’s enough to make a grown man cry. Or, at least, make a radio show host rant about it.
Just in case you blinked at any time during the first three weeks of the new So you Think You Can Dance season, let me bring you up-to-date.
SYTYCD had its Season Premiere on May 26. The show completed the audition process in just three episodes, with each audition city getting a one-hour block of air time. Then it was on to Vegas Week, where seven rounds of performances were condensed into a single two-hour show, which aired on Wednesday this week. Then last night, we got the Top 20 reveal.
If you are dizzy at this point because of how fast things are moving, I completely agree with you. And I sympathize.
In some ways, SYTYCD is a breath of fresh air when it comes to how it handles the audition process. Unlike American Idol, a show that has you begging to be put out of your misery by the time the audition process has ended, SYTYCD leaves you wanting more. And I would rather be left wanting more than be left wanting to have a lobotomy.
But there is always a risk when you leave an audience wanting more. If you are not careful, you will leave your audience unsatisfied. And that is what the So You Think You Can Dance producers did with their Vegas Week.
Of all the competition shows on TV today, I think SYTYCD has one of the most grueling, if not THE most grueling, contestant weeks. What these dancers go through for a shot at making the Top 20 is enough to make me ice my feet just watching.
Over the course of three days, there were seven rounds of contestant dancing: 1) Solos; 2) Hip hop; 3) Broadway; 4) Ballroom; 5) Group; 6) Contemporary; 7) Solos. The pace for the contestants is simply non stop.
And that’s why I’m puzzled, perplexed, and disappointed that all that action was condensed into a single two-hour show. These contestants worked hard during these three days, yet we were only given a glimpse of what they went through. Both the contestants and the audience deserves better.
Vegas Week deserves two, two-hour shows. The first show could focus on the first four rounds, while the second show could focus on the Group and Contemporary rounds. As these are usually the two most difficult rounds for the contestants, I’m sure they could easily fill an hour each.
Doing this would make everyone happy. The audience would get to see more of the contestants hard work and would leave feeling satisfied yet wanting more.
And as an added bonus, we would get to know the contestants a little better. And as we start the Top 20 next week, it’s important for us to know who the heck is on stage competing.
So, So You Think You Can Dance, please stop, take a breath, and stop rushing us around so much. We can rush when we’re trying to make that doctor’s appointment on time. When watching the show, we want to enjoy, relax, and savor the moment.
What do you think about the pace of So You Think You Can Dance so far? Is it too much, too little, or just right? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
And don’t forget to listen to the Idol Radio Show next Wednesday and Thursday at 11 PM ET / 10 CT / 9 MT / 8 PT.

Alan, I myself like the pace of the auditions this year. I don’t so much care about the auditions, especially the group phase when people are fighting with each other. I think they showcased everyone enough to get to know them, I could probably name most of the top 20 off the top of my head right now.. Being that they are doing a top 20 this year and not a top 10, I guess that’s why they sped up the audition phase of the show. The gotta have more episodes for the actually competition.. All in all, I’m loving this season of SYTYCD. The dancers are all GREAT and it’s gonna be a fantastic and very tough to call season! My early favs are Melanie Moore, Clarice, Ryan (Blonde girl), and Robert “Woooo”..
@ ChuckRitt: I mentioned on the radio show last night how much I’m enjoying this group of contestants. Seems like the contestants get better and better each year (“American Idol” should take note on how they do that).
Very true, Alan.. This is probably the best overall group of talent they have ever had on SYTYCD. Did you catch Nigels jab at Idol last night when he said “SYTYCD has had many female winners, not like other shows that heavily favor the male contestants”? I thought that was great..lol
