ROCK ON DUDE!! Ok that was my “rock moment”. The contestants had their “rock moment” this week with Gina sitting in the audience just itching to get on stage. She will get her chance to “rock out” during the tour. The thing that I like about rock music is that it is “music”. You seldom if ever hear “samples” or “tracks” in rock music. It still relies on real musicians playing real instruments (mainly guitars). You don’t have to be a “great” singer either to be a rock star. What you need is lung power and a presence to make you stand out from all those guitars on stage.

We are down to the final six and now you can really start to see who has what it takes to weather the storm. I have now broken them down into two groups. “the amateurs” and “the professionals”. I think one of my early articles talked briefly about this. How some of the contestants appear that they have been working at this for years and the others look like they picked this up as a secondary gig. Well that theory is now even more solidified looking that the final six.

Amateur- a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.

Phil, the navy officer, has now become the leader of this group, and is improving weekly. He has a very strong instrument and is finally starting to get more comfortable using it on stage. He faired quite well this week and is starting to even do better with his beginnings which have always been an issue for him.

Lakisha is still the “church girl” learning the song for the monthly choir musical and even admitted that is the only singing she has done prior to the competition. This week she was the only one to choose a slower song, which is her “safe zone”. She even went back and grabbed the “hey” from the end of “And I Am Telling You” which was a desperate attempt to make people remember her inaugural performance. I am sure she felt disadvantaged this week due to the fact that neither Carrie Underwood, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, nor any other female previous contestant had done a Bon Jovi song on the show. This means she had no blueprint to learn/copy from.

Chris, the football player, gave us the impression that there was a contractual agreement made with Bon Jovi and the producers for “Dead or Alive” to be performed and it was his duty to fulfill the agreement. The result was not pleasing. Not only did his voice lack the punch needed for the song every time he said “alive” it sounded like “alie”. A yes it was “a lie” that he told himself that he would be able to pull this song off anywhere near the level of Bon Jovi or even Chris Daughtry. Is it too late for him to return to football?

Professional - following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain

Melinda, the background singer, is clearly the leader of this group. I know it is crazy, but I was actually worried about Melinda when I learned of the theme for this week. I know a few Bon Jovi songs, but I am not familiar with the bulk of their catalog so I was wondering how she was going to be able to find a song that fit her. Being the professional, it didn’t even matter for she made the song fit her. All the material needs is musical notes and she will make it work. Doesn’t matter what the genre, it’s music and she is a professional singer, so there is really no issue. I shall never doubt her again.

Blake, the club act, brought his tools this week. His beat box was back in full form and he was actually quite entertaining. He re-worked the song and gave it a Jamaroqui/90’s techno feel. I give him credit for his production skills. Still not a singer, in my opinion, but very creative nevertheless and displays his level of professionalism by creating from the blueprint a different outcome.

Jordin, the seasoned contestant, once again displays that she is not foreign to the stage. There is much talk that she is “only 17”, but Jordin has already been on one TV show that I know of and has probably been in countless talent shows and I am sure has won some along the way. I enjoyed her this week. She adapted to the genre and gave a good performance. I am starting to notice some “tremor” in her voice that wasn’t as apparent earlier in the season. I am detecting that her voice might be getting worn out which also crept up on Katharine McPhee last year.

Since two have to go home this week my money is on Lakisha and Phil. It’s going to be a toss up between Phil and Chris, but I do feel Lakisha will be returning to her choir loft.

The Results

I was half watching the result show but I did catch Robin Thicke perform and it’s becoming quite evident that Idol is truly becoming a Variety Show. This might be due to the fact the contestants have been less than spectacular, other than Melinda, so they are pumping the show this year with real artist.

I was not surprised that Phil and Chris were sent home and Lakisha is going home next week to leave the professionals to battle it out in the final three.
