I am not a fan of CBS’s “reality game show” Big Brother. I watched the first episode when it debuted in Summer 2000, and that was the last time I ever watched a full episode. I did, however, watch portions of most shows through the rest of the first season as well as read updates that were posted around the web. This was because the eventual winner, Eddie McGee, was a University of Texas at Arlington student at the time, and I was mostly following what happened to him.
Since then, I have not gone out of my way to keep up with the show. I will occasionally catch an eviction vote or watch a Head of Household or Power of Veto competition, as these are the only parts of the show I think are worth watching. But I have gone entire seasons of not paying any attention to the show or the contestants involved.
As it happens, though, I did watch some of the shows following Brendan’s first and second evictions this season. I knew from what little I paid attention last season that Rachel would likely have a meltdown as a result. Therefore, I was aware of Shelly’s alliance with Jeff and Jordan and her eventual betrayal (again) that resulted in Jeff being the second evicted houseguest on Thursday.
My reaction to the betrayal was to snicker and say, “I guess Jeff and Jordan regret saving her now.”
The reaction of others, however, have been much less kind. And much more threatening.
TMZ Online posted the following on their website a little bit ago regarding threatening calls Shelly’s family has been receiving following her betrayal.
“Big Brother” contestant Shelly Moore pissed off America when she voted to evict fan favorite Jeff Schroeder last week — and now TMZ has learned her family has been receiving death threats from deranged fans because of the move.
Sources close to Shelly tell us … the reality star’s family has received multiple phone calls from people threatening violence … even making threats against Shelly’s 8-year-old daughter.
We’re told Shelly’s employer has also been receiving harassing phone calls — demanding the company fire Shelly immediately because of the way she voted on the show.
Sources tell us Shelly’s family is preparing to get the FBI involved — because they’re taking the threats VERY seriously.
Are you kidding me? You people do realize that this is just a freaking game, right?
Why would anyone get so upset at how someone chooses to play a game that they would then call that person’s family on the phone and threaten them harm? Worse yet, threaten that player’s eight-year-old daughter with harm. Are you so warped that the common sense portion of your brain simply shuts down when someone on television, ON THE FREAKING TELEVISION FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, does something you don’t like?
Sadly, however, is that the actions of these future rubber-room patients are not isolated. It has become a statement of society today that if someone does something you don’t like, you threaten them with violence or death, or you threaten their family with the same. No longer do you just simply toss the furniture in your apartment around and scream until you are hoarse. Gone are the days where you grabbed your shoe and threw it at the TV. Long ago was the time when you slapped your forehead, groaned how Jeff and Jordan were the only people in the world to not see Shelly’s true colors, and then go, “I wonder what else worth watching is on right now?”
Get a life, people. Stop shoving your anger issues into other people’s faces. Get a stress ball. Go for a walk. Exercise with a punching bag at the local gym. See a therapist. But stop threatening a game contestant’s family, especially the eight-year-old daughters, just because you don’t like her or what she did to another contestant.
In short, grow up already.
