Alan, aka the Token White Guy, started off tonight’s Idol Radio Show with a small tribute to Donna Summer, who passed away earlier today. Sir Darryl didn’t have much constructive to say about it. The guys then moved on to American Idol, with Alan asking what was the reason that Jessica Sanchez was able to move on to the finale with Phillip Phillips. Darryl gets upset with NBC’s decision to air The Voice twice next season, saying that the turnaround time is too short. Queen Angie joins the guys to talk about the big X Factor news that broke this week and what that means for the show. The three then talk about whether Jennifer Lopez’s comments this week were intended to send a signal to Idol that she would demand more money to return next season.

The IRS personalities get one point for each correct Bottom 3 pick (text in blue) plus one point for each correct Bottom 3 order placement (yellow highlight). Most weeks, points for Bottom 3 placement will only be given for correctly picking who will be going home. But if Ryan Seacrest announces the order of the other two Bottom 3 contestants, then points will be given for correct placement.

The American Idol Top 3 sang three songs each yesterday, all in the hopes that one or more of their songs will have gotten you to vote. There is nothing else they can do now but sweat through 50 minutes of filler in order to get to Ryan Seacrest’s announcement of “After the nationwide vote, the person not going through to the Finale is………..” Will your favorite be the name that finishes that sentence?

Tonight’s American Idol opens with a video montage of the Top 3 getting to go home after last week’s results show. The montage fades to a shot of the Top 3, with Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez dressed to the nines while Phillip is dressed to go to a ballgame.

The judges are introduced and walk out from the back of the auditorium while Ryan Seacrest is already standing next to the judges’ table. Must mean someone is waiting behind the split screen already.

Nope, not set up behind the screen. Instead, the stage is already set for the Top 3 to sing The Beatles’ “Gotta Get You Into My Life.” The three sound really good together tonight. It is very fun watching Jessica and Joshua sing followed immediately by Phillip singing a solo bit. His style is so very different and the contrast between them is amazing. Phillip just can’t help himself.

Time for the Ford Music Video, which has Joshua and Jessica acting like silent film stars. Jessica is trying to steal money from a safe but is caught by Joshua. WAit, why are the silent film stars singing? Don’t they know what silent means? Once again, Phillip is no where to be found in this video.

The Top 3 are all sitting on what Queen Angie likes to refer to as the Silver Space Stools of Doom. No comfy couch for them to sweat it out tonight.

Ryan says “Let’s get serious.” With that, Joshua Ledet joins Ryan at the center of the stage. About the judges’ pick, Jimmy says Josh had a good night last night. Not his best night, but a good one. But Jimmy does think the judges were being too nice to Josh last night. He said it didn’t deserve a standing ovation. About the contestant’s pick, Jimmy says Joshua is the most exciting showman in the competition right now. But Jimmy said Josh had to overcompensate “Imagine” with riffs and runs because the melody is so simple, and that the overcompensation didn’t work. About Jimmy Iovine’s pick, Jimmy says Josh needed the big moment to end the night but that Jimmy failed to give Josh the song he needed to be able to do that.

Time for some cross promotion for the next Ice Age movie. This was filmed back when Hollie Cavanagh was still in the competition. The bit starts with the animals from the movie calling Jennifer Lopez thinking that she is the tigress she plays in the movie. The Top 4 are now in the studio with someone from the movie.

Lisa Marie Presley takes the stage next to sing her new single, “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” This ist he first time that Lisa Marie has taken the American Idol, though back the Season 5 the contestants met her when it was Elvis week and they all went to Graceland. I think Lisa has a good voice overall, but I don’t much care for her style of singing. So it’s probably a good thing that my phone is ringing right now. *mute*

Time for Jessica Sanchez to get her performances reviewed. About the judges’ pick, Jimmy says the song was beautiful, tender, and poignant. But it still didn’t come together enough for her to win the competition. About the contestant’s pick, Jimmy says the judges seem to feel that it all came together at the final note, but that it wasn’t enough. About Jimmy Iovine’s pick, Jimmy says he didn’t realize that Jessica would have to be both Michael and Jermaine in the song because of how it was written.

Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert takes the stage next to sing “Never Close Our Eyes,” which is from his new album that dropped on Tuesday. I miss the Adam Lambert that competed during Season and wish he would return. I’ll be on a different channel until he’s done.

Time for one last performance review as Phillip Phillips takes to the center of the stage. About the judges’ pick, Jimmy says Phillip did a great job, saying it was entertaining and fun. He also says he’s becoming more original and less like other artists. About the contestant’s pick, Jimmy says he likes that Phillip is willing to go down in flames to try something different, but he agrees with the judges that it was too boring. About Jimmy Iovine’s pick, Jimmy says Phillip won the night with the Bob Seger song and that it was Phil’s best performance of the season and best performance of all contestants for the season.

All three contestants take center stage next to Ryan. But we’ll have to wait until after the break to find out which two are going through to the Finale and which one will be going home.

Ryan is holding a card he says contains the news of who made it to the American Idol Finale. After nearly 90 million votes, the first person to go to the Finale is………….. Jessica Sanchez.

The guy going on to the Finale as well is………….. Phillip Phillips. That means Joshua Ledet is going home.

Don’t ever doubt me, America. Don’t ever doubt my predictions.

American Idol Season 8 Group 1 contestant, and Idol Radio Show favorite, Brent Keith has posted a new song to his YouTube account. Below is the description that he posted about the song.

This is a song that I wrote for/about my Grandpa (Gene Webb) just prior to his passing in July of 2003. I wrote it to honor him and to be a reminder for myself over the years of exactly what he meant to me and all the things he did for me to help me become the man I am today. I hope you guys like it.

I’ve listened to the song several times since he released it on Tuesday. It’s about all the things Brent’s grandpa taught him as he was growing up, from how to fish to how to be a man, from taking his hat off at the table to being there for his family. The song is amazing and is very worth a listen.

Brent also said in the description of the video that “this is a small preview of what kind of music will be on the album.” I hope he is able to make that album a reality.

It’s all about America’s Got Talent and American Idol tonight as Alan, aka the Token White Guy, and Sir Darryl give equal time to each of the competition shows. The America’s Got Talent portion of the show involves nipple rings, confessions of the hosts, the format of the show, Howard Stern not shocking people, and Granny G’s audition. The American Idol portion of the show involves who is and isn’t an artist, and hell freezing and thawing out several times as the guys rank the Top 3 on their performances.

Philip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez, or Joshua Ledet. One of those three people will be crowned the Season 11 winner of American Idol. I have listed them in the 1-2-3 order I think they will finish in, but will the voters agree with me? Or will they upset the delicate balance of the universe by arranging them in a different order?

Ryan Seacrest starts off tonight’s American Idol by introducing the name of the towns that the Top 3 are from. He says they have won the hearts of their hometown, but now must win over the hearts of the nation.

The judges are introduced and come walking out from behind the sliding glass door. Jennifer Lopez looks nice in a white suit tonight. Even Steven Tyler is dressed tame tonight. Randy Jackson, on the other hand, is wearing an orange blazer or a black t-shirt that has something written on it. Ugh.

Ryan reminds the audience that American Idol will be on different days next week. The performance show will be on Tuesday, May 22, while the finale results show of the season will be on Wednesday, May 23. Times for both nights will be 8 PM ET / 7 PM CT.

There will be three rounds tonight: Round 1 will be songs picked by the Judges, Round 2 will be songs picked by the contestants themselves, and Round 3 will be songs picked by Jimmy Iovine. Will the judges, contestants, and Jimmy pick the correct songs? We’ll find out soon enough.

Joshua Ledet

Joshua Ledet will start the night off. Randy says the judges picked the Etta James song, “I’d Rather Be Blind.” Joshua certainly has the voice for this type of song, and he is trying to take us back to Etta’s day by bringing out the old-style microphone again. Joshua nails most of this song, except for a couple of over-the-top screeching that didn’t really add anything to the song. Still, his vocals are amazing and I think it’s a shame that he actually has to compete a season after Jacob Lusk did because Joshua doesn’t deserve to be compared to Jacob. Joshua can more than hold his own. Just great. The judges do their standing ovation impression again. Ugh.

Jessica Sanchez

Next up tonight is Jessica Sanchez. Jennifer says the judges picked the Mariah Carey song, “My All.” Jessica starts off very soft and tender, giving each note the loving care the song deserves. There is a small part in it that is too low for her voice, however, but it’s just a small blip. Unfortunately for Jessica, it’s another ballad and I don’t think America is going to be too happy about that. Also, I don’t know how well America knows this song. But the worst thing about this performance is that the song doesn’t give Jessica anywhere to go. Yes, it’s soft and tender throughout. She caresses the song very nicely. And it would be a great song for her to sing in the middle of a concert. But for this stage of the competition, I think this was a very poor song choice by the judges for Jessica.

Phillip Phillips

The last singer for the Judges’ Pick Round is Phillip Phillips. Steven says the judges picked Madcon’s song, “Beggin’.” Phillip has his trusty guitar with him for this song and immediately makes it clear that he has Phillipized this song. I can’t say I’ve ever heard the song before, but I frankly don’t care because Phillip makes whatever he sings his own anyway. It’s also the only high energy performance of the first round, showing that judges do understand who can handle this type of song. For as wrong as the judges were in their song choice for Jessica, they were every much right with this song choice.

Joshua Ledet

Joshua Ledet is one his way home. He says he was freaking out a little bit on the plane ride home because he didn’t know what to expect once he got there. He was happy to see his family. After a brief stop somewhere I didn’t catch, Joshua takes us to church. Literally. He took us to his dad’s church. While at the church, Joshua says he has a surprise for his nice, Chloe, who he has been missing. The surprise is that Chloe will ride in the parade with him. And that, of course, leads us to the parade. Joshua then goes back to high school and is greeted by loud cheers in the gymnasium. Now it’s off to the hometown coliseum, where Joshua has sold out the place for what he thinks is the first time in its history. As he sings for the audience, his mom and dad are standing up front beaming with pride. There is a fireworks show for Joshua to end his visit home.

Joshua is singing John Lennon’s “Imagine.” A lot of people had been hoping that Phillip would be singing this song because this song has provided so many good moments on the show before. So it will be interesting to see what they think about Joshua’s performance. Joshua starts off very muted, kind of like he is deliberately holding back somewhat. It’s obvious after the first couple of lines that this will not be a moment for Joshua. And Joshua throws in a screech for good measure about two-thirds of the way through the song. Vocally it’s a good song. But there was simply nothing special about it. I would enjoy it if he did it at a concert, but it just didn’t work for this point in the competition.

Jessica Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez goes home to San Diego. Since she didn’t have far to go, she was flown there in a helicopter, which she says scared her to death. Her first stop is the ballpark where she first auditioned this season. She goes from doing a radio interview to the Chula Vista Amphitheater, where she is greeted by a large crowd. It’s now Saturday morning and she goes home to see her family and two dogs. She takes her family in the limio to the next stop, which is a parade in her honor. Her two brothers ride with her in the parade. Jessica is blown away by the support. Jessica is having to be escorted through a large, crushing crowd at the Chula Vista football field. The city has named the day after her. Now it’s off to the U.S.S. Midway where another large group of people, including sailors, are cheering her on.

Jessica is singing Aerosmith’s song, “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” Will Steven Tyler like this performance? Jessica starts off soft and tender, but unlike the previous song, she quickly builds up some momentum and power. It seems like Jessica has picked a great song for herself, a ballad that was done by a rock band. A quick camera shot of Steven doesn’t give anything away to what he is thinking. Jessica continues to build up power in this song, but then has a blip when it sounds like she is off-key. She also seems to struggle keeping that final note on key. Steven gives her a standing ovation anyway, then emulates his heart beating in his chest. I was expecting so much more from Jessica in this song. That hurts.

Phillip Phillips

Phillip Phillips goes home to Leesburg, Georgia. There is a large group of people at the airport to meet Phillips when he lands. On Saturday morning, he heads to the pawn shop his family owns and that he worked at. There is a large group of people there to see him as he goes in, all of them touching Phillip as he walks to the front door. His dad gives him a HUGE hug as soon as Phillip walks through the door. His dad is clearly so very proud of his son as tears well up in his eyes. His mom is dying to see him now, and she rushes to the limo as soon as it pulls up. Time for Phillip to go to his parade, which his parents ride in with him. The crowd at this parade is huge! Doubled what was at Joshua’s and Jessica’s parade combined! The crowd on the football field where a stage has been set up for him is very large as well.

Phillip is singing Matchbox 20′s “Disease.” He has his guitar with him again, along with a bongos player and a sax player. It’s a laid back song, as laid back as any Phillip song could possibly be. Phillip is grooving to the song and we are all feeling it. There is simply nothing else I can say about Phillip at this point. He Phillipizes every song he sings, and when he likes a song, you can see that the music and words flow through every part of his body before finally being released out of his mouth for us to soak up.

Joshua Ledet

For Joshua Ledet, Jimmy Iovine picks Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.” Joshua is wearing a black jacket that has sequined patches on the shoulders that looks a little off. When the tempo of the song picks up, Joshua starts bouncing up and down in place, which looks a little off as well. The performance is fairly subdued for the first half, but picks up the closer we get to the end. Joshua takes his jacket off which causes his earpiece to come out as well, but it doesn’t seem to slow him down. For much of the last third of the song, Joshua screeches like there is no tomorrow, which ruins the song for me. The audience, however, seems to love it as they are all on their feet. For once, though, the judges remain seated.

Jessica Sanchez

For Jessica Sanchez, Jimmy picked Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There.” I’m not sure about this pick, so we’ll see. Jessica starts off nicely, but will she do as well once the tempo picks up? Surprisingly the answer is yes. She is able to keep up without any problems, for once not trying to put on a persona in the process. Instead, she remains herself. As the notes go up, Jessica has no problem hitting them. This is the Jessica that I love to watch perform, and I’m glad I got to see it again tonight. But will it be enough to overcome the first two songs?

Phillip Phillips

For Phillip Phillips, Jimmy picks Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight.” No guitar for Phillip this time. Instead, he starts off sitting on a stool. But you can tell he’s itching for his guitar and he rubs his left hand up and down his left leg cause he doesn’t know what else to do with it. It’s another laid-back performance for Phillip, which means the judges probably won’t like it. But Phillip delivers just like he always does. His vocals are spot on, the music fills Phillip up before being released for us to listen, and this song has some kind of emotional feeling for him as he gives one of the most soft and tender performances we have ever seen from him. Wow. Randy likes it. He really, really likes it. Says it’s Phillip’s best performance on the show, ever.

If you missed last night’s America’s Got Talent San Francisco auditions, then you missed a real treat that came to us in the form of an 80-year-old lady using a walker named Granny G.

While we may gripe, complain, and moan through all the obviously joke auditions we are forced to sit through when watching American Idol, we still manage to come together and laugh with, or at, the occasional William Hung who appears on our TV screens. The last joke audition we saw that we really liked was from “General” Larry Platt, who sang “Pants on the Ground” despite being a few decades over the upper age limit.

While AI’s good joke auditions are few and far between, we see several of them each audition season on America’s Got Talent where the viewers not only embrace the auditioner, but the judges will often send them through to Vegas. And last night in San Francisco, that’s exactly what happened with rapper Granny G when she decide to share some information about family values.

Make no mistake: Granny G isn’t likely to get past the Vegas round. But I love that America’s Got Talent is a show that can put such joke acts through to Vegas if for no other reason than to acknowledge that it was fun to watch them, let them have fun for a few days in Vegas, and maybe give them one more shot on TV.

And in case you missed it, Granny G says she is currently writing a song for the girls out there. All I can say to that is…….. I hope you girls have been behaving, cause Granny G isn’t putting up with your nonsense.

If you’ve been paying any attention to the news over the past 48 hours, then by now you know that both Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have signed on for Season 2 of The X Factor, joining the returning Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid at the judges’ table. As I’ve said a few times this season on the radio show, Cowell needed to get two high-profile signings if he wanted any chance of improving the ratings of his singing competition show. And while there are others out there that are higher profile, Spears and Lovato are nothing to sneeze at.

Spears has sold over 72 million albums worldwide since releasing her first album, …Baby One More Time, back on January 12, 1999, not including compilation albums or extended plays. And while her current sales aren’t anywhere near what they where back then, she does continue to release Platinum selling albums and chart-topping singles to this day. Lovato has been on TV since playing Angela during the 2002-2003 season of Barney & Friends. But it was 2008’s Disney movie Camp Rock that propelled her to new heights.

Yet both Spears and Lovato may be as known for their public meltdowns as anything else. It’s been just over 5 years since Spears had a night on the town that resulted in her publicly shaving off all her hair, and just over 4 years since Spears was placed under the conservatorship of her father after another meltdown where she refused to relinquish custody of her two kids. Lovato dropped out of both the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert World Tour 2010 and her hit Disney series, Sonny With A Chance, in late 2010 to enter a treatment facility after punching out one of the Jonas Brothers’ back-up dancer. She later told ABC News that the treatment was for bulimia and self-injury.

So while Simon Cowell is hoping that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato can rejuvenate The X Factor and bring in some sorely needed new fans (something I think they might be able to do), the bigger question may be this: Can Spears and Lovato handle the pressure that will be part of being on the show?

Both women have managed to keep a relatively low-profile (paparazzi wise, anyway) since their respective meltdowns. But Spears is still under the conservatorship of her father and now her fiancée while Lovato is only a little over a year into her recovery. They both will have long hours ahead of them in filming their segments of the show, especially once they get to the Judges’ Homes section. And neither Cowell nor Reid were what you would call nice to the last two female judges that shared the table with them, especially once we hit the Top 12. Will Spears and Lovato be able to handle that kind of pressure for all those weeks?

I might just have my doubts about that. On the way to officially being announced as one of the new X Factor judges, Spears was photographed getting out of the car without any panties on. Isn’t that about the time all her troubles got started last time? And the news media is already writing about anything Britney they can think of.

Then again, maybe this is what Cowell is hoping for. If the girls start craving the attention again and can keep hold of the paparazzi’s attention, the show would have a never-ending source of free press for the remainder of the year. At which time he can start the search process for two new female judges all over again.

Very cunning, Simon Cowell. I tip my hat off to you.
