Channel Surfing: ‘Super Duper Sumos’

Super Duper Sumos

This blog entry could easily fit into the Are You Serious? category, because, frankly, ARE YOU SERIOUS WITH THIS? But I already have one of those scheduled for both this week and next week, and I really, REALLY did not want to wait two weeks to post this.

I was channel surfing Sunday morning to see what was on TV when I came across the opening sequence for a show called Super Duper Sumos. After I finally managed to pick my jaw up off the floor, I just knew I had to share this most disturbing idea for a show ever little gem of a show with my loyal viewers.

Watch the video after the jump.

Yes. That’s right. Super Duper Sumos is an animated series about three sumo super heroes who use their BIG BUTTS while fighting crime.

Somewhere out there, Sir Mix-a-Lot is regretting the day he ever uttered the lyrics, “I like big butts and I cannot lie….”

According to the show’s Wikipedia page, the show aired for 26 episodes in 2002 and 2003 on Nickelodeon. The three sumos can also, apparently, “Sumo Size,” which each having a special ability while fighting.

In every episode the three wrestlers “Sumo Size”. This makes them stronger, more muscular and considerably larger. Each sumo has a characteristic move they use when “Sumo Sized”, usually the three sumos initiate they attack one after another in the same order. Mamoo performs “Sumo Squeeze”, which literally is a powerful squeeze of the enemy. Kimo attacks with “Honourable Thunderball”, in which he spins towards the opponent like a bowling-ball and hits them in this fashion. Finally, Booma attacks from above using “Gluteus Maximus”, in which he uses said muscle to squash the opponent.

I’m trying to picture one or more Nickelodeon executives sitting at a table while the show’s creator, Kevin O’Donnell, pitches the concept of the series to them. I can’t help but wonder if Kevin hired three of the largest sumo wrestlers he knows to come in and live-act the basic concept of the show. Even worse, I’m trying to picture any executive giving their okay after having large butts repeatedly shoved into their faces.

I suppose we should be grateful that only 26 episodes of this show was produced. But I would have been even more grateful had this show never been made in the first place, so I wouldn’t have had the unfortunately pleasure of coming across it today.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go pour some bleach into my eyes to try to get these images out of my head. If you’ve managed to pick your jaw up off the floor, leave your thoughts in the comments below. And if you were one who watched this as a kid, leave your explanation in the comments below.
