On the radio show last night, Queen Angie and I dated ourselves by talking about what was on TV in the past. One of the shows I brought up, that both Angie and I remember very fondly, was Battle of the Network Stars. The show, which aired 19 times from 1976 to 1988, was an inter-network sports competition that pitted the television stars from each of the three major networks against each other. The winning network had bragging rights until the next competition.
While the stars who participated were there to have fun, and would often taunt their competitors mercilessly in some of the competitions, they always gave it their all. This wasn’t a competition where the stars gave 25%. They took the competition seriously, giving 100% less they bring shame to their network.
Howard Cosell hosted or co-hosted 18 of the 19 competitions, using a semi-serious version of his reporting and play-by-play style that he was known for.
When I mentioned the show on the air, Idol Radio Show regular DJ Slim laughed at Angie and me. Frankly, he dismissed the whole notion of watching TV stars competing against each other.
But that was because he wasn’t aware that the show had beautiful women in swimsuits getting wet.
Wow. I really did date Angie and me. Ricky Schroeder was still starring in Silver Spoons and Heather Locklear was in TJ Hooker.
