It’s YouTube week on America’s Got Talent. Last year, we got 10-year-old singing sensation Jackie Evancho, who was an early odds-on favorite to win the whole competition. She ended up in second place. Her debut album, Dream With Me, has been on the Billboard 200 for 7 weeks, reaching as high as #2. The album is also holds the top spot on the Classical chart, where it has been for several weeks.
Outside of Jackie, however, last year’s YouTube week was pretty much a dud. Turns out, what worked well on the website did not translate to the TV screen. Will this week be just as bad?
Let’s hope not. Otherwise, I may have to boycott YouTube.
Okay. That would never happen. I’m too addicted to all the people who think they have a right to pester Tobuscus and iJustine about whether they were ever dating and, if they were, what happened.
Makes me want to reach out and slap them silly.
On a side note, a commercial for the new season of The Sing-Off, airing for the first time ever in the fall, aired before the show. I can’t even begin to tell you just how much I’m looking forward to it. I really hope it doesn’t air against The X Factor.
First up tonight on America’s Got Talent is a group called TNC Elite that clogs. As in those really annoying shoes that make people long for simple tap dancing. There are parts of the performance where the group is just not in sync with each other or with the music. But there are also parts where they were spot on and it was great. But I just don’t see America voting this type of routine through. No matter what the TNC Elite spokesperson said.
Next up is 50-year-old illusionist Brett Daniels. He does a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The act starts off slow and with a gaff, when the drape covering the picture of Marilyn hanging from the ceiling doesn’t lay down properly, allowing us to see the picture change to blank. The act moves really, really slow. This is a problem with many acts, who does acts that would work in a 90-minute show but not as a 90-second snippet.
Okay. What Brett just did while his number was being given out was funny. That alone might be worth a few votes.
We have a dog act next, with Gabe the bulldog. Gabe is so ugly, he is cute. It’s a slow act, as is often the case with animal acts, but I think he would be great as part of a larger animal show. The best part of the act is when he impersonates Piers by pressing an X button, followed by him peeing on a cut-out of Piers. He deserves to go through to the next round just for that.
Parkour group Aeon is fourth up. Can the group go from performing in the wide-open spaces of the urban jungle to the closed confines of a stage? I think they tried to overcompensate for being in such a small space. There is just so much going on stage at the same time, with the six girls standing in various places dancing and the five guys all over the stage, sometimes all at the same time. I love watching people do parkour, and the guys are clearly talented. Depending on the other eight acts tonight, I think this group may get one more chance to show what they can do.
Eight-year-old Breena Bell contorts her way on stage next, aiming to break our hearts with her cute face and plucky attitude. During the pre-performance, we see that she is having a hard time working with a trainer through rehearsals. It’s mostly a gymnastics act with some contortion of her body and dancing. Piers Morgan buzzes her about two-thirds of the way through. I understand why he did it, but I don’t think I would have had the buzz her.
Singer Kevin Collis takes the stage with his guitar to sing to us. There are a lot of good singers on YouTube, many of whom I think could easily win competitions like this and American Idol, or even have a deal with a record label. Kevin certainly seems to be in that category. He may be the best singer we have seen so far this season. He’s got experience and maturity to back up that talent. I will be highly upset if he doesn’t make it through to the next round.
Fourteen-year-old Beth Ann Robinson dancers her way on stage. With younger contestants, whether singing or dancing, I often worry about their maturity level. You can have someone with a lot of technique, but without the maturity to properly harness that, it can fall flat. Last year’s YouTube star, Jackie Evancho, had both. And so does Beth Ann. She has a lot of talent and is able to project her dance out to the audience. With all the great group dancers this season, however, I’m not sure there is a place for her.
Acrobatics group Gymkana is next. They start with two ladders being held by three guys, one at the bottom, one in the middle, and one at the top, while three girls on each side hang off it and various people leap through it. Such incredible feat of strength and coordination. Amazing performance. Poor guy at the bottom of the ladder. After everyone gets off, he’s left holding up the two ladders. This is clearly the year of the group dancers. They have had some of the best performances of the season. I really hope they make it through to the next round.
Kalani Basketball Freestyle dribbles his way on stage next. In the pre-performance video, Howie Mandell says Kalani is a one-man Harlem Globetrotters. This is another case of a YouTube video not working on TV. He has six girls dancing in the background that, unfortunately, take a lot of focus away from Kalani. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is tremendously talented and I love watching videos like this. He did drop the ball twice during the routine, which doesn’t really surprise me considering how big of a stage he was performing on this time.
West Springfield Dance Team dresses in all black and turns on the fog machine prior to taking the stage. They say they like to take their hip hop routines to a frightful extreme, but they come across more like emo hip hop dancers, which seems like an oxymoron. It didn’t really seem like there was a lot of actual dancing taking place on stage, or, at least, not what I would call dancing. With all the other great group dancing we have seen this season, I don’t know how the judges could say they are up there. Hopefully, America will send them back to school.
Matt Wilhelm, who won America’s vote in the YouTube competition, brings the black light and his bicycle to the stage. His act starts off with what looks to be an empty red bike doing tricks by itself. AFter that bike goes off-stage, we see him doing bike tricks without a bike. Then the red bike comes back out and he does tricks on that. The guy is amazing. It was more like he and the bike were dancing together, that’s how good it was. Loved it. Since America has already voted him through once, I see no reason why they won’t do it again.
The final act of the night belongs to the glee kids. No, not the kids from Glee. Instead, this is a real high school show choir, called Powerhouse. In fact, it is the show choir that reportedly inspired the TV show. If Ryan Murphy had watched Powerhouse’s performance tonight, though, I’m pretty sure he would have moved on to a different project. The performance did not work on any level. The acoustics on this stage don’t work at all, as I cannot understand a single word that was sung. In addition, there were quite a few pitch problems. Please, someone cancel that group. And, while you’re at it, don’t vote for Powerhouse either.
My picks to go through this week are Gymkana, Kevin Collis, and Matt Wilhelm, with either Gabe Rocks or Aeon joining them. I had a good week last week as all my picks made it through. My forehead vein appreciated the night off.
So what did you think about tonight’s performances? Do you agree with my picks? Or did you prefer one of the less good acts? Share you thoughts in the comments below.
And don’t forget to join Rickey from Rickey.org and me tonight at 11 PM ET / 10 PM CT for the Idol Radio Show.
