‘America’s Got Talent’ – Finale (Live Performances)

America's Got Talent

Tomorrow night, America’s Got Talent will crown this season’s champion. This new champion will join Bianca Ryan, Terry Fator, Neal E. Boyd, Kevin Skinner, and Michael Grimm. That’s four singers and one ventriloquist. Does the fact that 80% of the previous champions were singers give Anna Graceman or Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. a leg up on the remaining dance groups in the competition? Or will Team ILuminate or Silhouettes rise up and sing goodbye to the remaining singers?

Conventional wisdom all season has said this was the year of the dance, but we still have tonight’s performances to go. No matter how much we’ve loved an act the previous weeks, they could find themselves back home if they fall apart on stage tonight. Likewise, an act we’ve tolerated all season could become the front runner with a performance tonight that rocks the house.

With only four acts taking the stage, tonight’s America’s Got Talent is only an hour long. Hopefully, only having four acts to fill an hour means that they will give the acts a little more stage time to perform instead of the roughly 90 seconds the acts have gotten in the past weeks. If that happens, though, it could benefit Anna Graceman and Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. more than Team iLuminate and Silhouettes, who would need to design routines that can hold our attention longer.

No use speculating any longer, cause the show is about to start.

Join me as I blog the America’s Got Talent performances live after the jump.

SCHEDULING NOTE: Tomorrow night’s America’s Got Talent results show will begin an hour earlier, at 8 PM ET / 7 PM CT. It will be a two-hour show.

Here we go. The final four acts on this season’s America’s Got Talent are going to take the stage over the next hour to give us one final reason to vote for them to win $1 million dollars and the headline spot in a Las Vegas show. In addition tonight, Season 2 winner, Terry Fator, will perform on the show. I haven’t seen him perform since he was on the show four seasons ago, so I can’t wait to see his act now.

Nick Cannon tells us that this season’s auditions started over 12 months ago and that over 100,000 acts auditioned. We are then treated to a clip of some of the auditioners this season. It’s a long clip, actually, covering most of the acts who made the Semi-Finals, some of them twice. I wish the clip had focused mainly on the final four acts, but oh well. Time for a commercial.

First to perform tonight is Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. In his pre-performance video, he tells us about being homeless at the age of 19. Piers Morgan says that Landau is a crooner extraordinaire. I feel Landau is too rough around the edges to be called “extraordinaire.” But what is this? Is he finally trying to prove me wrong? There is a large band on the stage behind him, he’s wearing a white suit, and standing on a large black raised circle singing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” He sounds excellent and I’m putting salt on my words, prepared to eat them. But then the music picks up and the key goes up. And with that, the roughness that I have seen in him the entire season returns. Still, it was an overall good performance, the best I’ve seen from him all season. The guy has talent. But I don’t agree with Piers. It was not a million dollar performance tonight.

Nick tells us before we go to commercial that Landau will be performing a special duet with Patti LaBelle tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to that. Should be pretty good.

When we come back from commercial, Nick leads into a Video of the final four acts being taken to Vegas to see what they will be getting if they win. First we see them getting a deluxe breakfast at a penthouse suite at the Cesar’s Palace. They are then taken to the stage where one of them will become the headline act for the Cesar’s Palace show. I can only imagine the goosebumps they all got being there.

Team iLuminate takes the stage next. Howie says there is a great chance that they will win the whole thing if they stay at the level they have been. One of the members of the group cries when talking about how they have never worked so hard in their life. There are lighted hearts on the costumes tonight. The music, dancing, and lights all pick up after an intro. The moves and effects we are seeing are the best they’ve done all season. My only fear is that it won’t translate onto TV and computer screens for voters. I do badly want to see them live in person, cause as much as I love them now, I think I would love them even more then. The audience and judges give Team iLuminate a standing ovation. Deservedly so.

Nick tells us that tomorrow, Team iLuminate will be performing with Cobra Starship. Not sure how that’s going to work. Guess we’ll find out tomorrow.

A series of commercials and one Jell-O Mousse Temptations later (no, this is not a sponsored blog…. I was just hungry), Season 2 winner Terry Fator takes the stage. He starts off with “the legendary Julius,” and sings some soul. Unfortunately for Julius, he sang a hoedown, which Terry takes him to task for. Julius then tells Terry that he’s the “whitest guy he knows.” I should take offense to that (I am known as the Token White Guy after all), but it’s too funny to be upset. Julius then breaks into a rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which includes one of the longest stretches of “I know, I know, I know, I know” that I’ve ever heard of. He still has it.

During the commercial, we find out that Nick has a guest spot on the new NBC comedy, Up All Night. Not sure if his guest spot is during tomorrow night’s Series Premiere or not.

Time for PopLyfe to take the stage. In the pre-performance video, the group tells us the person who creates all their arrangements is just 15 years old. As much as I haven’t cared for PopLyfe’s performances in the past, it was never a problem with the arrangement. That dude is scary talented. Tonight, PopLyfe takes on the classic Queen song, “We Will Rock You.” It’s a mess from the very beginning. The lead singer is off-key in many spots, and the band just isn’t in sync with each other. The song turns out to be a melody of Queen, as they go into “We Are The Champions.” It’s even a worse mess than the previous song. And I’m ready to take my kudos back of the kid who arranges the song. I’m sure that someone out there will want to say that this was a hot mess. They would be wrong. There was nothing “hot” about it.

Nick tells us that tomorrow night, PopLyfe will be performing with the “sensational Stevie Wonder.” If Stevie is smart, he will find a way to come down with a cold before tomorrow night.

Silhouettes is the last group to take the stage tonight. However, Nick says there are some technical issues. So we see a video of some of the funnier auditions, including the unicycle rider who uses Howie’s head to stabilize himself on stage. Too funny. We also see the bit where Howie and Piers sword fight each other. Thankfully, Sharon pressed the final X from that audition to put a stop to it. And then there was the guy who broke board after board on his head. I’m not sure why he didn’t make it anywhere on the show, though it might be because he is wondering the streets somewhere with amnesia after all those boards. And then there is the guy who couldn’t sing who cartwheeled right off the front of the stage. The guy was pissed off after Howie buzzed him out.

Nick says the show’s crew is taking care of the technical difficulties, so we see another video, this time of the stuff that Nick did during the auditions. He is actually a much better host than I ever would have thought, and is genuinely funny quite a lot. And he’s great with kids. What more could Mariah Carey want?

As I laugh at the thought of all the DVR people who won’t see Silhouettes perform now, they take the stage. They simply skip the pre-performance video entirely since they are running out of time. Tonight’s performance is done to the song “What a Wonderful World.” It’s a beautiful performance, though one that I didn’t realize had already started since I was expecting the aforementioned pre-performance video. At the end of the performance, Sharon’s buzzer goes off by itself. The judges rush through their praises since they are over time.

I am absolutely livid at how the end of the show went. Instead of showing us both of the videos we were shown during the technical difficulties, we should have been shown Silhouettes pre-performance video. They apparently had the capability since we saw those other two videos instead. That way, they could have been given the same screen time as the other three groups. In addition, the judges should haven’t been rushed as much as they were. I know the show was running over, but it’s completely unfair to the Silhouettes.

This is forehead vein popping livid, folks. Tomorrow night’s radio show is going to contain a lot of yelling over this.

My pick to win this season is Team iLuminte, though I would also be happy if the Silhouettes won instead.

  1. LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. ew says:

The tech glitch was called in from Vegas. Do you really think they want to babysit a bunch of kids from Denver every night for a year. They slanted this show for an “illuminate” win, and the kids got screwed. I have DVR and I got screwed too. All I saw was up to the Chinese temple. And ohh… by the way…whoever wins..dont count your million bucks to fast as in the fine print for a milisecond at the end of the show they disclose its a million dollar annuity paid out over 100 years or something like that.

  3. I’m not much of one for conspiracy theories, so I’ll believe for now that it was not an intentional technical issue. Besides, if Cesar’s Palace really said no to Silhouettes, the show could simply say that Silhouettes wasn’t the winner even if they were.

As for the $1 million prize, you are correct. It is distributed at $20,000 a year for 50 years.
