It is night three of the special three-night American Idol Season 11 Premiere. Tonight’s show, which is officially scheduled for 10 PM ET / 9 PM CT / 8 PM MT / 7 PM PT, will air immediately after the New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship game. That means the start time could be later if the game goes over allotted time. Also, the show will air at the same time over all time zones, meaning the west coast will watch the show at the same time that the east coast watches.
Tonight’s auditions take place in San Diego, California. Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler will take on the deluded, the talented, and the somewhere-in-between hopefuls that want a chance to get a golden ticket to another location in the state: Hollywood.
Join me after the jump as I live blog tonight’s San Diego auditions. And chat with other American Idol fans during the show in our Shoutbox.
NOTE: DJ Slim will be doing a limited live blog on tonight’s American Idol auditions over at our sister site, IdolBlogLive.com. Check it out for another viewpoint of tonight’s show.
Update – 10:08 PM ET: The Giants vs. 49ers football game ended in a 17-17 tie, sending it to overtime. As a result, tonight’s American Idol is going to be very delayed. As a reminder, Idol will air in all time zones at the same time immediately after the game.
Update – 10:38 PM ET: The Giants have won the game. American Idol will start after the FOX analysts have had a chance to have their say on the game.
Here we go. It’s 10:58 PM ET, and the NFC Championship game, and all the post-game chatter, has finally ended. Time to watch some American Idol wannabes try to impress the judges, and us viewers, with their singing skills.
The audition room is on the U.S.S. Midway for the San Diego auditions. If I was to ever try out for the show, which will NEVER happen, so don’t worry, I would like to do it on an aircraft carrier. I would like to think that would be a lot of fun.
The first contestant tonight, Jennifer Diley, calls herself an all-american girl. She calls herself this because she is wearing a red-white striped bikini top smaller than daisy duke blue jean shorts. Ryan makes her go up the stairs twice so the camera can film her butt hanging out of her smaller than daisy duke blue jean shorts. It’s bad enough to see her prostitute herself by the way she is dressing. But then she opens her mouth. And it’s bad. Very bad. Thankfully, all the judges agree. But she sings a second song anyway. And it’s just as bad. Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson talk about what color bikini she should have worn as she leaves. Ugh.
When we come back from commercial, Ryan tells us it is twelve-noon and Steven is trying to push the censors to its limits. We are then introduced to Ashley Robles, a young lady who brought her five-year-old daughter with her. Ashley says her daughter likes “On The Floor” by Jennifer Lopez. She is singing “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston song for her audition. Will these people NEVER learn? It’s not Whitney, nor is it anywhere near as good as it should be. But she does have a good voice. And it’s more than enough to impress the judges. Three yeses later, we have our first Golden Ticket of the show.
Jerah Gibson is up next. In his lead-up video, he says he has always been told that he cannot write and he cannot sing, that he can only sing. Say what? He tells the judges that he has written a song for Jennifer Lopez called “Shake Your Moneymaker.” He sings a bit for her before going into his real audition song. And guess what? Despite his confusing statement earlier, the guy can sing. In fact, he can really sing. He’s got a great R&B sound to him. Three yeses sends him on his way to Hollywood.
After Jerah, we get a video montage of other auditioners getting their Golden Tickets to Hollywood. In one clip, we see a tall young guy hit his head on top of the ceiling below deck. Someone might want to stick a “Warning: Low Ceiling” sign up there.
Time for another auditioner, and this comes in the form of 20-year-old Aubrey Deckermeyer. Her mom, dad, and sister are next year. In her video, she says her mom’s encouragement to come try out for America’s Next Top Model has been great. Ummmmmm, wrong show, Aubrey. Several clips later, the show gives up. She just can’t seem to say American Idol. She is taking on Michael Buble for her audition, and she takes it on quite well. Even better, she doesn’t try to walk the runway while auditioning, which would have just been awkward. The judges are in love with Aubrey, and rightfully so. Three yeses later, and we have another Golden Ticket holder on our hands.
Just saw my commercial for the new 21 Jump Street movie adaptation, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? They have ruined the legacy that was a great TV show! And that’s just a 30-second commercial. I can only imagine how bad the rest of the movie will be. I will NOT be personally finding out.
Next up is Ali Shields, who was once on Ellen DeGeneres’ show thanks to her YouTube videos. She says she really didn’t sing in front of anyone until about a year ago. When asked what she’s going to sing, she says she’s going to rap for them. Oh geez. This is bad. It’s so bad, she makes The X Factor‘s Brian “Astro Turkey” Bradley look good. She finally stops the rapping and sings a legitimate song. She has a decent voice, but on the low end of the decent scale. The judges love her. Why? I have no clue. I’ve given up trying to figure out this show, especially after they give her three yeses.
When we come back from the latest commercial, we’re told it’s Day 2 of the auditions. Steven Tyler tells the camera that he can’t wait to hear 40 people sing the same Adele song for six (beep) hours.
Kyle Crews, a frat boy, is up first on Day 2. He says that he has a tendency to serenade every girl that comes over to the frat house. Ugh. Now he’s telling Ryan that he’s focusing on Jennifer Lopez’s face to prepare for his audition. Double ugh. He is singing “Angel of Mine” by Monica and is singing it to Jennifer. I’m not a fan. Don’t get me wrong: there is talent there. But the judges are all blushing over how good this guy is, and I don’t see that at all. Mediocre at best. But I don’t get a vote, so he gets three yeses.
When we come back from commercial, we Joanne Childers already auditioning. A few seconds later, we hear a big ship horn in the background. And that leads to a video montage of all the interruptions they encountered from both ships and airplanes. Ryan says that all the horns and sounds helped bleep out the things Steven Tyler was saying. No clue what happened to Joanne.
Next up is Jim Carrey’s daughter, Jane Carrey. Yes, THAT Jim Carrey. She talks about trying to find her place in the world being the daughter of someone famous. She tells the judges that her father does know that she is there auditioning. Jennifer asks if Jane remembers here from when she was a Fly Girl on In Living Color. Jane doesn’t, pointing out she was only like 2-years-old at the time. Jane has a great voice, though it is rough around the edges. The judges think so as well and give her three yeses. She immediately calls her dad on the phone for us to hear her give him the news.
Now that I think about it, I think Jane appeared once or twice on In Living Color. Can anyone else remember?
Seven minutes left in tonight’s show, so there is just enough time for one more audition. Jason Hamlin, a 24-year-old golf course mechanic, who goes by the name Wolf, is that last audition. His arms and hands are heavily tattooed. He tells Ryan that every female that he told he was going to audition told him that he had to kiss Ryan for them. Thankfully, he doesn’t. He is singing “Midnight Special” by CCR. I had already written this guy off because of his looks and am quickly shown why that is a mistake. He has a great voice, though Steven isn’t quite convinced. After asking for another song, Jason asks if he can use his guitar. The judges say yes, and Jason proceeds to give us an audition to end all San Diego auditions. His great audition leads to three quick yeses.
Ryan tells us that “53 hopefuls got that Golden Ticket to Hollywood.” I put tonight’s auditions on the same level as last Wednesdsay’s Savannah auditions. It was that good. I’m already salivating to see how Hollywood Week goes.
